FITNESS FOR THE COMMON MAN

I was thinking while running the other day, which is about all the multitasking I can handle. I was thinking about what stories that I read, in the hojobillion magazines I peruse, that really inspire me. The stories about the ultra-elite athletes are informative, and often amusing, but they don’t really get me going. The kind of training that those folks have access to, and the resources, are beyond my reach. What inspires me more is the letters, and editorials, that people send in. The stories of the folks who have been inspired, and what they have accomplished. I don’t find it really useful to aspire to be like Lance Armstrong, or Ronnie Coleman, or Bruce Lee (well, that last one may be an exception…). Rather I want to be like the gal that reads Oxygen magazine religiously and has lost 110 lbs over the last 12 months. Or, the guy that reads Muscle & Fitness, and can’t afford gym fees, so he gets some hand me down equipment from family and raids local garage sales to construct his own garage gym and whittles himself down to 5% bodyfat. Just cause he wants to. Or, best of all, the grandmother who at 50, with no prior experience in martial arts, decided to study Taekwondo. She went on to win a gold medal in an open tournament in her home state… six months later. My friends and family too keep me inspired, with the things that life throws at them, and their tenacity in keeping on.

My hero is the common person who does what they set out to do. It makes no difference, to me, whether it takes them a day, or a lifetime, to achieve their goals. Just that they keep going until they do achieve.

That’s what makes it easy to run 62 minutes before breakfast…. well, almost easy…
