THE MEATRIX

Do you want to
check….
it….
out…?

Friggin’ funny, and scary in a ‘yeah I know all that, but what am I doing about it’ kind of way.

In a moment of serendipity I was reading The Philosopher’s Diet in bed last night, a section on the economical (and moral) shortcomings of mass meat farming, when I heard the first bits of The Meatrix, screach from the other room. Daisy was net-surfing and came across it. Weird huh?

The section I was reading was about how Richard Watson, the author of The Philosopher’s Diet, had been asked to contribute a chapter to World Hunger and Moral Obligation some years before. In researching the material Mr. Watson found that, with current rates of consumption, production, effeciency, and whatnot, if we were to evenly distribute all food currently being produced everyone would be undernourished. In other words, with current food production methods, some must be undernourished and in a state of famine for some to eat well. He also found that there was a solution, one that would not work with current distribution and co-operation issues. If we stopped feeding farm animals and distributed all that grain along with all other foods everyone would be over fed. He went on to say that he did not think that everyone would want to go vegetarian, so if we kept a small portion of the animals fed, and cooked more like the Chinese do*, ie- sparing use of meat in recipes, we would all have more than enough to eat.

Now, I am the first in line at the burger joint, and at the I-eat-lots-of-meat line, so I am not preaching. But, I have been having second thoughts lately, and not all from a ‘let’s save bessie’ place. I am realizing that eating lots of meat is not making me feel good, kind of the opposite, and I suspect it may be connected to my increase in sickle instance.

Food for thought…

[*Note- this is not Chinese resteraunt style cooking, but Chinese people style cooking]
